Introduction

At Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC, we take education very seriously. Our teacher trainers have almost 50 years of collective experience, we have a large, fully equipped studio, a superior dedication to our program, and hundreds of satisfied clients who will attest to the fact that our knowledge and caring has contributed to their improved physical condition.

Our name, Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC, describes who we are and what we offer. For us, “authentic” means we have been trained by Joseph Pilates’s first protégé, Romana Kryzanowska. The work we pass on to our students comes directly from this original work without exception.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All applicants must complete a minimum of 35 hours of private lessons with one of our instructors prior to being accepted into the program. However, this requirement may differ at the discretion of the teacher trainer.

To begin the program, students must demonstrate proficiency at the intermediate level, and be able to apply the principles of Pilates. An assessment by a teacher trainer is required for admission.

Documentation from a physician is required attesting to the student’s ability to pursue a physically rigorous program.

LINEAGE TO JOSEPH PILATES

Lineage is crucial in Pilates training and certification because it strictly adheres to the founding father’s teachings, which produced remarkable results. It is important to emphasize here that, as stated above, the Senior Master Teacher Trainer and Master Teacher Trainer at Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC were trained by Romana Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates’s first protégé. This makes Romana Kryzanowska a FIRST GENERATION instructor to Joseph Pilates. Our teacher trainers are SECOND GENERATION instructors to Joseph Pilates. Therefore, the students we certify at Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC will be THIRD GENERATION to Joseph Pilates.

Mat certification

Mat 1

The Mat I Program is the foundation of Authentic Pilates Learning Center’s Teacher Training Program. During this weekend, students will learn to teach the 18 mat exercises and become acquainted with teaching tools, philosophy, and techniques. The course includes a review of basic anatomy from a Pilates perspective. Graduates of this course will know how to teach a 60-minute mat class (including modifications and variations for advancement).

Prerequisites:

  • Attend a minimum of 10 Pilates classes, (preferably taught by a classically certified teacher)
  • Memorize the mat order (sent to you upon registration) prior to the weekend

MAT II

During the Mat II Program weekend, students will learn even more exercises—including where to add them within the sequence of the original order—and continue to work on expanding their teaching skills. Graduates of Mat II will have the ability to simultaneously work with people of all ages and fitness levels in a more challenging 60-minute mat class.

Prerequisites:

  • Graduate from Mat I
  • Memorize the Mat II order (sent to you upon registration) prior to the weekend

PILATES TRAINING SESSIONS

Teachers need to become proficient in the Pilates Method. Deep awareness of their own bodies helps them understand what their clients needs are and how to best tailor a Pilates session for each client. A minimum of one session per week with a master teacher is suggested. This can be a private, semi or trio.

Special rates are offered to apprentices while in the program. During each phase of the program, students are expected to meet the following:

  • Basic System: At least 1 private per week
  • Intermediate System: At least 1 private or 1 semi per week
  • Advanced System: At least 1 private or semi or trio per week

Apprentices are required to take a minimum of 100 private lessons during the teacher training program. These training sessions can be spread out over the 600 hours.

ANATOMY WORKSHOP

A mandatory one day APLC Anatomy Workshop must be attended during the required 600 hours. It will be offered several times within the year to make it more convenient to attend.

MINI-WORKSHOPS

APLC offers monthly mini-workshops on various topics throughout the year. These mini-workshops are available to all current apprentices free of charge. You must register for them ahead of time, as they are open to the public.

Once an apprentice graduates from the program, you will be able to attend these at a discounted rate for as long as you keep your certification current.

OBSERVATION HOUR REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are required to complete all 600 hours of observation at Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC. The apprenticeship consists of practicing seminar material with other apprentices or teachers, observing sessions, assisting certified teachers and teaching other apprentices.

Apprentices receive ongoing feedback and guidance by the master teachers and teacher trainers as appropriate. During each stage apprentices are expected to meet the following requirements:

  • Observing and assisting teachers (all levels)
  • Practicing with each other (all levels)
  • Teaching student clients (all levels)
  • Teaching clients (Intermediate/Advanced)

Applicants can take notes during the observation and compile questions for the instructor to be asked after the lesson or to one of the teacher trainers.

PRACTICE

Once a seminar level is completed, an Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC applicant may self-practice only those exercises presented in that seminar and/or practice those exercises with another Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC applicant who has attended that seminar level.

ASSIST TEACHING

At the discretion, and under the direct supervision of a certified instructor, an applicant may assist in teaching.

TEACHING CLIENTS

At the discretion of the teacher training staff, an Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC applicant may be assigned to teach a healthy client who pays a reduced rate for that service. Additionally, the Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC applicant will be nominally compensated for this service. This is done in the spirit of getting practice on real clients. At least an intermediate level test must be passed prior to this privilege.

TESTING

BASIC TEST:

APLC apprentices must teach basic mat, basic reformer, and one basic exercise on each apparatus as chosen by the testing teacher trainer. There is a short written test, which is taken at a separate time.
Tests can be scheduled between 180 and 200 hours. If the test is not completed by 220 hours, no additional hours may be accumulated until the test is completed and graded.

INTERMEDIATE TEST:

APLC apprentices must teach intermediate mat, intermediate reformer, and one intermediate exercise on each apparatus as chosen by the testing teacher trainer. There is a short written test, which is taken at a separate time.
Tests can be scheduled between 380 and 400 hours. If the test is not completed by 420 hours, no additional hours may be accumulated until the test is completed and graded.

ADVANCED (FINAL) TEST:

APLC apprentices must teach advanced mat, advanced reformer, and TWO advanced exercises on each apparatus (where applicable) as chosen by the testing teacher trainer. There is a written test based on case studies, which is taken at a separate time.
Tests can be scheduled between 580 and 600 hours. If the test is not passed successfully, the portions of the test that are deficient will be reviewed with the Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC master teacher and a number of additional hours will be assigned in order to become proficient in those areas. At the end of those additional hours, those areas may be retested.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC expects high levels of attendance because full participation is essential to the successful completion of the program. Students must attend 100% of the training seminars, as these seminars are the cornerstone of the three stages of the program. Students are expected to be at the studio to pursue their apprenticeship at least three days a week. Students who must miss apprenticeship hours or weekly apprentice workshops must notify the studio as soon as possible.

TERMINATION POLICY

A student who fails to meet the attendance requirements and maintain satisfactory progress, violates safety regulations with the equipment (as taught in each seminar), interferes with another student’s work, is disruptive, obscene, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or does not make timely tuition payments is subject to immediate termination.

Students dismissed from the school that request re-entry must put the request in writing to the program coordinator. In cases where the student was dismissed for excessive absences (greater than 15%) or financial concerns, it may be possible to re-enter as soon as the student is able to make the time or financial commitment required to pursue the program. In cases where the student was dismissed due to unacceptable conduct, the student must meet with the director and coordinator before re-entering the program. The decision of the master teacher is final and the student will receive an email within five business days stating their decision.

THE BRIDGE PROGRAM

Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC recognizes the value of students who have spent time and money becoming certified by other organizations teaching the Classical Pilates Method.
Although described as classical, many of these programs may be quite different from what we describe as classical. For this reason, each one of these applicants wishing to gain a certification from Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC must be taken as an individual case.

Procedure:

  1. The applicant will have an opportunity to participate in an initial interview with a teacher trainer. Although preferred, if a personal interview is impossible, a telephone interview may be arranged.
  2. Upon completion of the interview, a personal visit to Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC is arranged to set up a practical assessment through a lesson given by the teacher trainer on the mat, reformer, Wunda Chair, and Cadillac.
  3. At the completion of this assessment, a complete review of the application is done with the applicant and teacher trainer.
Based on the assessment, the teacher trainer will assign the number of hours to be completed in the Authentic Pilates
  4. Learning Center LLC Teacher Training Program. These hours will be between 100 and 300 depending on the assessment outcome.
  5. If it is felt that the level of knowledge of the applicant differs greatly from that of the Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC requirements, the full 600-hour program must be embarked upon and the Bridging Program will not be available to that applicant.

NOTE: Bridge apprentices are free to continue to teach outside Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC, but may not reveal or otherwise indicate that they are certified by Authentic Pilates Learning Center LLC until such time as they complete their program and received their certificate.

Aside from the above, Bridge apprentices are subject to all the same rules and guidelines as outlined for full 600-hour apprentices.

COMPLETION OF TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM

Once the certification program has been completed, teachers are encouraged to continue with their observations and private lessons to gain more practice in their teaching skills as well as their own Pilates practice. APLC offers discounted rates for all APLC certified Pilates teachers in all private lessons and workshops.

APLC certified Pilates teachers are required to accumulate a total of 12 continuing education credits (CEC) every two years in order to keep their certification current. This assures the continuing growth in their teaching skills. All workshops offered at APLC states the number of potential credits earned.

  • Mini-Workshops (3 hours) = 1.5 CEC
  • Anatomy Workshop (6 hours) = 3 CEC
  • APLC Teacher Training Seminars (6 hours each day) = 3 CEC
  • Guest Teacher Workshops (1.5 CEC for every 3 hours)

Teachers who are current with their certifications will continue to receive discounts on all workshops, seminars, and training sessions.

Authentic Pilates Learning Center will refund full tuition and the registration fee if an applicant is not accepted into the program or if the student withdraws before training begins. If the program is cancelled, Authentic Pilates Learning Center will refund all monies paid.

Authentic Pilates Learning Center will refund all monies if the applicant cancels within five business days after the day the contract is signed or an initial payment is made, as long as the applicant has not begun training.

The registration fee will be refunded in full if the applicant withdraws within five business days of signing this agreement or making an initial payment, provided the applicant has not started training. After the fifth day, APLC will retain the registration fee equal to 10% of the total tuition cost, or $100, whichever is less.

If training is terminated after the student begins (attending seminars), APLC retains the registration fee established under (3) of the subsection.

All unused sessions from the private Pilates training packages will be refunded upon student’s termination.

When calculating refunds, the official date of a student’s termination is the last day of recorded attendance:

When the school received no notice of the student’s intention to discontinue the training program or,

When the student is terminated for a violation of a published school policy which provides for termination or,

When a student, without notice, fails to attend classes for 30 calendar days.

All refunds must be paid within 30 calendar days of the student’s official termination date.
